Mary Pogue, HCA
Hi, I'm Mary Pogue — owner and founder of A Friend Nearby, a companionship service proudly serving the Tri-Cities.
I'm a lifelong entrepreneur with a deep belief that our senior population deserves more support, connection, and joy while remaining in their own homes or independent living communities. This business began as an idea and a dream — one rooted in love, respect, and a desire to make a meaningful difference.
I have immense admiration for seniors and the lives they've built. Each person carries a lifetime of stories, talents, and experiences that deserve to be honored and celebrated. My goal is to be there when family members can't — offering companionship, kindness, and genuine connection.
I believe that what we focus on grows. By approaching each individual with intention, compassion, and respect, I strive to build meaningful friendships that enrich daily life. Whether it's sharing conversation, enjoying simple activities, or just being present, I am passionate about creating moments that matter.
"It is truly a privilege to support families by caring for their loved ones with dignity, warmth, and reliability. I deeply value the relationships I've built and look forward to the many more still to come."

What Families Are Saying
Heartfelt stories from the families we serve across the Tri-Cities.
“After our dad passed, my brother and I moved our mom to the Tri-Cities to be closer to us, but we couldn’t be with her as often as we wanted. Having Mary with her four days a week gave us such peace of mind. She didn’t just provide companionship—she truly enriched our mom’s life. They baked, went on walks, attended local events, explored museums, enjoyed arts and crafts, and even took scenic drives together. Mary became an extension of our family, doing all the things we would have done if we could be there ourselves.”
Karen
Richland, WA — Daughter of client
"My sisters and I first met Mary when she was caring for our mother through a local agency. Our mom was very particular and had many caregivers, but she connected with Mary right away. After our mother passed, we reached out to Mary again about a year later to be a companion for our father—and he took to her just as quickly. They enjoyed walks, spent hours doing puzzles, and shared countless conversations. Mary has a special way of connecting and bringing comfort to those she cares for."
Terri M.
Kennewick, WA — Client's daughter
"We met Mary through a friend of ours who had Mary as a caregiver. When not too long after we called Mary and asked her to be my dad’s companion as he needed someone to come sit and visit with him, make his lunch, exercise with and talk about things he liked to talk about and my dad had a workshop where he loved to hunt down odd bits and pieces and take unusual old frames and refinish them and then add his bits and pieces to them, Mary would assist him in his workroom and take him to Goodwill, yard sales and other second-hand shops. Mary is like family to us."
Sydney
Pasco, WA — Son of client
"Mary was a godsend. I was just diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and had quite a few appointments coming my way. Mary was available with just a phone call away. I could not have got through that first two months until my daughter was able to relocate here and take care of me. Mary helped me to keep my mind off of things with conversation, playing cards or reading aloud to me during treatment."
